About the Cotswolds

Known for their luxury and beauty, the Cotswolds are a wonderful place to get away from it all. Those with a taste for nature can visit the Cotswold Hills, which rise from the meadows of the upper Thames and end at Cotswold Edge, just above the Severn Valley.

The Cotswolds are alive with history. Their rare Jurassic limestone base had led to extensive quarrying for the golden ‘Cotswold stone’, and has given the area many unique geographic and historic landmarks, leading to its classification as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1966. The stone has allowed for wonderful rural landscapes with stone-built villages and stately homes. Examples such as Tewkesbury Heritage Centre, a restored 17th Century hat shop, and Bronze and Iron Age forts are well worth a visit.

Of course, the Cotswolds have other attractions, such as Gloucester Cathedral, Cotswold Wildlife Park, Cotswold Falconry Centre and Highgrove Gardens. Those looking for AGA cottages to rent in the Cotswolds won’t be disappointed. The village of Daylesford has a charming, stress-free atmosphere, with a selection of highly rated farmshops. Visitors might also try Barnsley village, a rural delight three miles from the historic town of Cirencester – often referred to as ‘the heart of the Cotswolds’.
