Home of cider and the white-faced cow, Herefordshire is one of the most rural and sparsely populated counties in England. It also includes the beautiful cathedral city of Hereford on the River Wye, only 16 miles from the border with Wales.
Walkers are well-served by the Herefordshire Trail, which offers a circular tour of the county and links the five market towns of Ledbury, Ross-on-Wye, Kington, Leominster and Bromyard.
Those with a taste for castles and cathedrals will be in heaven, as the area is packed with both. From household names like Hampton Court and Goodrich Castle to lesser known examples such as Hereford Cathedral, Croft Castle, Rotherwas Chapel and Eastnor Castle, you’ll never be short of a turret or steeple. Sports fans can enjoy Hereford Racecourse and Edgar Street, the stadium home of Hereford United FC.
Herefordshire is full of history, both good and bad – it was there that Owen Tudor, grandfather of king Henry VII, was executed by Sir Roger Vaughan. History buffs can hunt out the plaque marking the spot where Vaughan met his own demise at the hands of Owen’s son, Jasper. More pleasant landmarks, such as the Bishop’s Palace, can also be found – built in 1204, the building is still used today.
Those wanting to find AGA cottages to rent in Herefordshire should aim for proximity to a historical town such as Hereford or Peterchurch, where attractions and transport are easily found.
